Nyeri County leaders have defended President Kenyatta’s appointment of parastatal heads, including former head of Civil Service Francis Muthaura.
Former Nyeri deputy mayor Grace Wanyeki said Mr Muthaura is being criticised for nothing, adding that President Kenyatta’s appointments should be respected.
Mr Muthaura was appointed chairman of the Lamu Port Southern Sudan Ethiopia Transport (Lapsset) Corridor Development Authority.
“I wonder why young leaders are criticising President Kenyatta for appointing Mr Muthaura to head a parastatal given his age.
Being old is not a disease because God is using people like them to be role models to youths,” said Ms Wanyeki.
She said the former ambassador is ideal for the post because of his vast experience.
Ahadi Kenya Trust chief executive officer Stanley Kamau said those who oppose Mr Muthaura’s appointment are wayward.
Speaking during an end-of year party for the elderly in the county, Dr Kamau urged politicians to put aside their differences and work together for the nation’s good.
“I applaud the President’s decision to bring Mr Muthaura back to the government as his experience is no doubt vast and the Lappset project will come to pass as intended,” said Dr Kamau said.
However, Bishop Beneah Salala of the Anglican Church Mumias Diocese Wednesday took issue with President Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto over the controversial appointments to parastatals.
In his New Year message, Bishop Salala said the move to recycle the old guard and appoint them to key government positions was ill-advised.
He called upon the Head of State to rescind the appointments and give youths a chance to demonstrate their abilities to lead state corporations.
